Adopted text on the work: In his performance pieces from the second half of the 1970s, Lumír Hladík repeatedly explored the concepts of the “unseen” and the “unknown.” In Anonymous Remained Anonymous, he decided to touch a specific tree and through this act separate it from the multiplicity of the forest. However, because he never knew which tree he had touched, he could never get to know it closer. As with his other actions, here too he worked in the open landscape near Český Brod. He chose a particular forest and began to walk towards it across a field. Around 100 meters from the edge of the woods, he closed his eyes and continued walking until he touched a tree. After wrapping his arms around it, he turned back, keeping his eyes closed long enough so that he was sure that he would only see the forest without being able to identify his tree. The action was recorded by two of Hladík’s friends: Petr Soukup recorded it on a 16mm camera, and Leoš Malík on photographic film. It should be noted that Hladík gave neither of them any detailed instructions on how to document the action. The film was edited without Hladík’s input.
