Digitized color 16mm film with sound
Adopted text on the work: Grygar creates an ink-and-fire drawing using mechanical aids. He is the work’s catalyst and initiator, but its final form is to a great degree determined by chance. Again, much thought has gone into composing the space, and Grygar, dressed in black, stylizes himself into the role of a magician who pulls objects from his mysterious hat, using them to draw on the prepared surface. We see all the typical tools that he has been working with since the 1960s, except that this time around, the windup roosters have a lit match in their beaks. These unusual “brushes” also produce sound, which becomes an integral component of the work. The entire space, including the table and the chair, is white so that nothing will disturb the focus on the work itself. The final records of the work include not just the film, but also by the drawing made during the action and shown in close-up at the end of the film. As indicated in the credits, the concept behind Live Drawing was born in 1973.
