Adopted text on the work: The film shows Vladimír Boudník as he and his friends walk through romantic, snow-covered Prague. The cracked walls of the historic city center – a common sight in the dark days of the 1950s, just a decade after the war’s end – inspired him to engage in games of association. He finds real images in the mottled walls, such as a human portrait in profile or the head of a horse, which he brings forth through painting. The film was made by Jaromír Pergler, who also recorded Boudník’s actions on photographic film. Since Boudník’s main performance art period was earlier (1949–1953), this meticulously composed film may have been made as a later documentation of his “artistic conquests,” as Boudník called his actions in one of his writings. According to Boudník’s friend Vladislav Merhaut, who had a copy made in the 1960s, the film was subsequently shown at numerous “underground events.” The VHS transfer dates from the 1990s; since then, it can be seen in the National Gallery’s permanent exhibition of Czech art. The original film material has been lost.
