NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Notes: Included in the compilation He Who Laughs: Art About the World of Art (edited by T. Nekvindová, S. Sobotovičová). “Art about art” – videos that aim directly at the art world or wend their way through art history. Published in 2013 by the Research Centre of Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (VVP AVU).

Adopted text on the work: In her paintings and installations, Markéta Vaňková often makes references to figures from the history of art – the home of her alter ego Dr. Inframulti, a man with the face of Marcel Duchamp, a Warhol-esque wig, a Dalí-like moustache and a beard à la Leonardo da Vinci. In her video, she brings to life one of the paintings from her homogenous world while consciously making it hard for us to decipher it. The static, timeless scene in which she plays Leonardo da Vinci playing chess in a café with Marcel Duchamp, is a pointed play on words: on the lips of the café’s waiter-toreador, the French café au lait is transformed into the Spanish café olé. The scene includes Vaňková’s acrylic painting Gate of a Mysterious Female (2002). With: Robert Hlůže, Franz X. Huber, Markéta Vaňková. The work is in the collection of the National Gallery in Prague.
