NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Notes: Vít Soukup shot this silent film with intertitles in collaboration with his classmates from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague during the school’s plein-air retreat in Panenský Týnec. It is the first film to be produced by Kleť Picture, a fictitious production company whose name refers to the tallest peak in the Blanský Forest near České Budějovice.

Included in the compilation Vít Soukup: Everything! Films and Theater Performances 1993–2003 (edited by T. Nekvindová, S. Sobotovičová) - published in 2012 by the Research Centre of Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (VVP AVU) in cooperation with Divus.

Written and directed by: Vít Soukup

Adopted text on the work: A pastoral drama about a love triangle. The innocent Klara is forced to marry a coarse peasant, but her heart belongs to the young deacon František, who must first struggle with his faith in God. Jesus Christ appears as a deus ex machina to teach František that benevolence and forgiveness are more important than the rigid practice of faith. Soukup presents this classic storyline using kitschy shots of picturesque nature and exotic animals made of plush and gummi candy. The final credits, underscored by a rock music soundtrack, stand in for the film’s actual finale.
