Adopted text on the work: A film about the conflict between inward states and outward appearances. The main protagonist – a caricature of perfection – is shown to have a dark interior and thoughts of death. Although fate would appear to be a hermetic chain, and “consistency” would require unwavering steadfastness, at the critical moment our hero ignores principles and heeds the call of everyday life. The film is lent a spiritual dimension through the use of a bittersweet Norwegian song containing metaphors on the beauty of nature, the motif of wooden churches, and the abstract patterns on the many sweaters – so many, that it takes the main protagonist a long time to decide which to put on in the morning.

Around the same time, Soukup included the motif of knitted patterns in his series of paintings Dorka (2003); in Norwegian Sweaters the connection between his paintings and movies is most clearly visible. The main role is played by Michal Pěchouček, whose own early video art was influenced by Soukup’s methods. Norwegian Sweaters stands out somewhat from the other films of the tetralogy, although several features tie it in with its predecessors.
