NOTES AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Notes: Included in the compilation He Who Laughs: Art About the World of Art (edited by T. Nekvindová, S. Sobotovičová). “Art about art” – videos that aim directly at the art world or wend their way through art history. Published in 2013 by the Research Centre of Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (VVP AVU).
Archived separately as .mov format.
Adopted text on the work: This video by Norwegian artist Jesper Alvaer, who was studying at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts at the time of its creation, is an appropriation of I’m too sad to tell you (1971) by Bas Jan Ader – an iconic figure who left the scene (and life) in romantic fashion. Though at times the expressions of weakness and pain look like fits of laughter, for the viewer this confrontation with a stranger’s intimacy is an unpleasant one.
